It may come as a shock to most, but Hamilton Accies of the Scottish Premiership will be in for a chance of facing some of Europe’s elite this year and here’s why.

For background, the UEFA Youth League is a youth competition setup by UEFA for under 18 teams. The competition consists of the 32 teams who qualified for this seasons UEFA Champions League as well as the domestic champions of each under 18 league.

Hamilton, boasting a strong youth system, won the league last season taking the trophy home to New Douglas Park and hence have qualified for the UEFA Youth League.

With this award comes a chance to play against high flying Swiss side FC Basel in the First Round, a team who only last season beat Manchester United and made it to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. Hamilton will first play away in Switzerland before returning home to play the second leg at New Douglas Park. It counts as a historic first European appearance for Hamilton Accies at any level and something for the Premiership outfit to be proud of. The games will take place on the 3rd of October then the 24th of October.

The Accies won’t appear favorites for this tie but it’s the journey so far that’s creditable for the Hamilton youth system.
